sultan's market.

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

hands down, the best falafel sandwiches i've ever had are from sultan's market in chicago. i've been back for a month now, and i was finally able to make it over there for dinner tonight.

definitely one of my favorite restaurants in chicago. i'm gonna miss this place.

milking parlor.

Sunday, September 28, 2008

the andrews university dairy had their milking parlor open house this past friday. i thought it would be interesting to check out, so i dragged matthew along with me and this is what we found.

"The modern facility’s process is now streamlined, allowing the simultaneous milking of 40 cows three times each day. The milking machines have automatic take-off devices that sense when the milk flow has dropped low enough to remove the machine and stop milking that cow."

the milk then goes into tubes down below the cows and into the basement.

"i am never eating animal products again!" says matthew.

i'm in the middle of reading the book The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter. by Peter singer and Jim Mason.

it is an extremely eye opening book. if you're not sure where your food comes from, i recommend reading this book. who knows, maybe it'll even inspire you to become a vegetarian, or at the very least become more mindful of where your meat comes from. =]

pencils.

Thursday, September 18, 2008

today was just one of those days at work....

the network was down so i couldn't do anything. which also meant that ammi couldn't do anything either. so justin turns to her and says, "you weren't hired for this, but...you can sharpen these pencils."

so up to the attic we go. turns out the the sharpener couldn't take the heat and overheated after sharpening one and a half pencils.

p.s.
happy early birthday ammi. =]

raspberries.

ever since i went fruit picking a couple of weeks ago i've been craving more fruits. since it finally stopped raining for a couple of days i was finally able to drag matthew to take me raspberry picking again. and this time we brought vanja with us! =]

we have to go again next week! and vanja, lets go see if there are any blueberries left =]

fruits.

Tuesday, September 09, 2008

i'm a little behind on my weekend posts...this past weekend was full of fruit!

after church irv, matthew, andrew and i ate breakfast for lunch at hopper's. i've come to realize that hopper's is one of those places that i miss...not because the food is super amazing, but its just one of those places. there aren't any small town breakfast places back at home, especially ones that have the option of stripples instead bacon and prosage links instead sausage links.

after hopper's it was time to go fruit picking! the plan was just to go to pick peaches...but by the time the day was over we picked more than just peaches.

on our way to start picking peaches.

of course irv couldn't wait...he just had to try the first one he picked.

irv, andrew and i did all the picking...matthew just watched and took pictures.

this is posed. he was pretending to pick that peach.

andrew, you look a little scared of matthew.

kinda looks like we picked more than we ate huh? really though...we picked a lot of peaches!

matthew could barely hold all of them...

after peaches we went to pick some plums and nectarines...the plums didn't look that great. i think irv got bored.

and finally...our last stop was to pick raspberries.

once again matthew didn't pick anything. those are my raspberries hes posing with...

i'm definitely going pick some more raspberries this week. they're super good and i know i ate as many as i picked if not more than what i picked. =]

p.s.
thanks andrew for letting me steal your photos and thanks matchew for taking so many photos...you're learning...

happy bday, matchew!

friday marked matthew's 24th birthday. yup, its true, hes an old one. to celebrate we went to eat dinner at clementine's in st. joe.

i think matthew and anna smile exactly the same.

irv really wanted onion rings...so we ended up getting a 12 inch stack. look at matthew stuffing his face in the background haha.

mello...you were here celebrating with us in spirit. haha. matthew got your text and did exactly what you told him to do...he ate lots of cake and ice cream.

i have no idea whats going on here...but apparently we heart you, matthew.

matthew through the years...

hope u had a happy birthday, matchew! =]
